Publisher Whining Prompts Italian Investigation of Google

Complaints about "lack of transparency" from publishers have prompted Italian competition authorities to begin an investigation of Google's search and news services. I'm sure their motives are completely altruistic. "Because Google does not disclose the criteria for ranking news articles or search results, he said, newspapers are unable to hone their content to try to earn more revenue from online advertising. Ad revenue on the Web is directly proportional to the size of the audience, which is heavily influenced by search or Google News rankings."

Free Screen to Video for Windows does free screen captures

Free Screen to Video is a free screen capture utility for Windows. You can capture video of an entire display, just a window, or a selected area. The program can handle audio and video or just video. And you can save your files in a variety of formats including FLV, AVI, WMV, and SWF.

You don't get a ton of bells and whistles like the ability to edit or even resize videos within the application. But really, what were you expecting from a free screen capture utility? Just use VirtualDub or your editor of choice if you need to edit your screen capture.

The developer of Free Screen to Video also has a number of other apps including a CD ripper and several tools for editing and converting audio and video files. You can find them all at the developer's home page.

Love your GMail account but want to do more with it? If you're a Windows user, there are plenty of great (and free) apps that take advantage of your massive inbox in the cloud!

GBridge sets up a Hamachi-like VPN and offers loads of cool features for your Windows desktop, including file sharing, backup and synchronization, and remote control via VNC. Since the developers added support for Google Apps domains, this has become a great way to keep your office team connected.

GMail Drive is an oldie but a goodie. I've got several of gigs available, and there's no chance I'm going to fill that up with actual email anytime soon. Plug GMail Drive into Windows, and you can drop files into your extra space just like any other folder on your system.

g2peer allows simple file sharing with your friends via your GMail account. Don't need the other features from GBridge? g2peer is a good option. Your pals at the other end don't even need to install the app to get files from you since it supports "command line" interaction via GMail - check the help page to see how it works.

Make a bootable USB installer for Windows XP, Vista, 7 with WinToFlash

Making a bootable USB flash drive for Windows Vista and Windows 7 isn't all that tricky, but it's always nice to find an app that simplifies things. Not only does WinToFlash make the process about as easy as it can get, but it can also create Windows XP, Server 2003, and Server 2008 installers.

The default options make it easy to roll a silent Windows install, or you can flip the custom switch and specify the exact setup parameters you want to use.

The handy app also has one more trick up its sleeve: moving Windows Preinstall environments. PE discs can be extremely handy for troubleshooting and repairs, and being able to painlessly zap them over to a USB flash drive means not having to burn a new copy every time someone's haggard old optical drive decides to chew up your CD.

WinToFlash is a free download and is totally portable. It's an excellent tool to add to your USB-related utilities.

Buon compleanno! A me? A te!

Devo dire che quest’anno il mio compleanno mi è proprio piaciuto. Non ho mai atteso con trepidazione questo appuntamento annuale, lo considero più o meno un giorno come tutti gli altri.
Ammetto però che è bello ricevere delle dimostrazioni d’affetto da chi non ti saresti mai aspettato, e viceversa, non riceverle da chi ti saresti aspettato
Ho passato una splendida giornata festeggiando con la mia dolce metà in mezzo alla natura, non rinunciando ovviamente alla puntuale abbuffata…. niente feste, cotillons, e altre amenità, non ho mai dato tanto importanza all’apparenza e alla frivolezza.
